How to Reduce Pain From Braces

Are you getting braces soon? If so, you may feel a bit of pain or discomfort initially after you get the braces put on. Over time, you’ll start to feel normal, but the days after your initial orthodontic treatment and the following tightening appointments can be uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce the pain.

Adults may need to wear braces for as long as 3 to 4 years, according to information from Humana. Given that you’ll have braces and tightening appointments for years, it would be helpful to find some pain relief methods that work for you. Below are a few things you can do.

Use Pain Relief Medication

An easy step is to take over-the-counter pain relief medication like ibuprofen. You can even take it an hour or so before your appointment, so it’s kicked in by the time you’re done. Your orthodontist may also be able to provide anesthetic gels that you can place on your braces and gums to relieve pain.

Drink Ice Water

It doesn’t get much simpler or more effective than this. Drink cold ice water and be sure to swish the water around your gums. The cold water will help with inflammation and will reduce any pain and discomfort. This is a good option when the pain is mild.

Use Orthodontic Wax

Your pain may not be on your teeth and gums but rather on the inside of your cheeks. The sharp edges of your braces can grate against the inside of your mouth causing small cuts. Your orthodontist should be able to provide orthodontic wax that protects the inside of your mouth. Ask about wax at your next appointment with an orthodontist.

Maintain Good Dental Hygiene

Perhaps the best thing you can do to minimize pain from braces is to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of your teeth and gums. When you fail to keep your teeth clean, you increase the chances of gum inflammation that can be irritated by your braces. Brush regularly to keep your teeth clean. Your orthodontist may give you a special brush that can help you clean in and around your braces.

Braces are an effective long-term tool to improve your teeth’s appearance and health. However, they can be uncomfortable, especially right after orthodontic treatment and tightening appointments, so try these steps to minimize any discomfort.
