What is Orthodontics?

However, orthodontics involves much more such as:  monitoring of growth and tooth eruption, prevention of disharmony in occlusion, oral cancer screening, and treatment of dento-facial abnormalities.

What should I expect at the orthodontist’s office?

Every experience is different, but keep reading for a general guide about what you can expect when you are first getting braces or Invisalign at the orthodontist’s office.

Who is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist. The orthodontists at Orthodontics LA have continued their education for another three years post-dental school. They are highly skilled in areas of jaw misalignment, malocclusion, and improving your smile.

When should I visit an Orthodontist?

Any time is a good time to get a consultation with an orthodontist. The American Board of Orthodontics recommends an evaluation as early as seven years old. This allows the orthodontist to catch any malocclusions early on before they can become serious issues. More often, the orthodontist monitors the patient’s growth, until it is necessary to intervene with treatment. However, orthodontic treatment or braces are not limited to children. A growing number of patients are adults. It’s never too late to improve your smile!

How do I need to take care of my teeth while in treatment?

Do:

  • Brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once a day
  • Use fluoridated toothpaste
  • Keep your retainer in the box if it is not in the mouth to prevent it from getting lost or chewed on by a pet.
  • Eat soft foods and cut food into small pieces
  • Visit your dentist once every six months for check ups

Don’t:

  • Eat hard or sticky foods (taffy, pizza crust, nuts, gum, etc)
  • Play with your orthodontic appliance with your tongue or fingers as they can break or bend
  • Eat foods with sugar or drink soda

Do braces hurt?

No. Braces are placed on the teeth using special “tooth glue” called composite which is pain free.  You may feel some discomfort for a day or two while your teeth, gums, and cheeks get used to the braces. However, most of our patients have no issues at all!

How long is treatment if I get braces?

Orthodontic treatment can last from 6 months up to 36 months. However, the average time is 18 months to 24 months. A consultation with your Orthodontics LA orthodontist will provide a custom treatment plan which will meet your needs.

Can I get braces if I play sports?

Yes! Many of our patients are athletes. We recommend a mouthguard to protect your appliance while playing sports.
