Signs Your Teen Needs Braces

It’s hard enough being a teen – having a smile you’re not proud of makes it even harder. Many teens’ self-esteem is tied to what they look like on the outside. As much as we try to tell them it’s what’s on the inside that counts, sometimes it’s easier said than done. According to a study done by StageOfLife.com, 59% of teens feel inferior based on their appearance. That’s an incredibly high number. Yet, fixing their smile is more important than just helping them feel better about their looks. It’s also important for overall oral health. But how do you know if your teen needs braces? Below are signs to look out for.

Signs Your Teen Needs Braces

1) They lost teeth early or late

2) They have difficulty chewing or biting

3) Their teeth are crowded or have extra spaces between them

4) Their jaws click or make sounds when chewing

5) They frequently bite their cheeks or the inside of their mouth

6) When your teen bites down, their teeth meet awkwardly or not at all

7) Their teeth are out of proportion with the rest of their mouth

8) Their teeth stick out

If any of these signs apply, it’s possible that your teen needs braces. The first step towards addressing these concerns is making a complimentary consultation with Dr. Artin and Dr. Mel at Orthodontics LA in Encino and Glendale. Not only will a consultation put your mind at ease, it could also help your teen feel more confident.

If your teen is worried about having braces or the appearance of them, ask about clear braces or Invisalign. Our office uses Damon Clear Braces, which are made of a stain-resistant ceramic material. They use the same self-ligating frictionless system as Damon Braces, but with a less prominent appearance. Damon’s Clear Braces system does not use metal brackets or elastic ties that can yellow over time, so your teen can wear braces with more confidence. Our orthodontists at Orthodontics LA are one of the few in Encino and Glendale who offer this option to realign teeth.

During the teen years, most permanent teeth have filled in, so this is the best time to make adjustments – before conditions can worsen. Give our office a call today to request a free consultation to get more detail on braces for your teen.
